VPNs mix your traffic in with hundreads and thousands of other user’s data to obsecure it from your Internet Service Provider (like Verizon, AT&T, Froniter, etc…). They take note of what you do and how you behave, then sell this data to data broker which build profiles on your habbits, likes, demographics. This data is then available for sale to be marketed to or inspected.
